About Catfish Kelly’s in Fredericksburg
Tucked just off the highway at 661 Kings Hwy, Fredericksburg, VA 22405, Catfish Kelly’s in Fredericksburg feels like one of those rare hometown diners that locals whisper about and travelers stumble upon by luck. The moment you walk in, there’s an unmistakable charm—checkered floors, friendly chatter, and that inviting scent of Southern comfort food. It’s the kind of place where the waitress calls you “hon,” coffee refills come without asking, and the walls seem to tell stories from decades past.
What stands out first is the menu. You won’t find fancy plating or complicated dishes here, but you’ll get honest-to-goodness flavor. The fried catfish is the undisputed star—crispy golden crust, tender inside, served with hushpuppies and coleslaw that taste homemade. Locals swear by the shrimp po’boy too, packed to the edge and dripping with spicy remoulade. If you’re craving a hearty breakfast, the biscuits and gravy are worth waking up early for—pillowy soft biscuits smothered in creamy sausage gravy. Everything on the menu feels like it’s been tested and perfected by time rather than trend.
Reviews often mention how this diner brings people together—truckers, families, retirees, even the occasional road-tripper looking for something authentic. I chatted with a couple who’ve been coming here for over fifteen years; they said the consistency never wavers, which says a lot in today’s restaurant scene. The staff knows most regulars by name, and that sense of community seeps into every plate they serve.
From a quality standpoint, the food isn’t just comforting—it’s reliable. According to local dining forums, Catfish Kelly’s ranks among the most recommended spots for affordable Southern seafood in Stafford County. That reputation didn’t come overnight; it’s built from years of good service, generous portions, and the kind of warm hospitality that chain restaurants can’t replicate. Even small details, like fresh-brewed sweet tea or homemade tartar sauce, show the care that goes into each meal.
The location itself makes it perfect for a quick stop if you’re driving through Fredericksburg, yet it has that “neighborhood diner” soul that keeps people coming back. Whether you’re there for lunch with coworkers or a casual dinner after a long day, the place always feels welcoming. It’s not polished or pretentious, but that’s exactly what makes it special—a genuine slice of Southern comfort in every bite.
Customer Reviews
Catfish Kelly’s is a great experience. They sell products that you can purchase and they also have a small takeout type restaurant. I have not found crabs any other place, including the wharf that you can get as inexpensively as you can from catfish Kelly’s. Additionally, their food is great And I often drive a distance to go and get their food. You will always find people coming and going out of the store, but the service is wonderful and you get your food rather quickly.
I actually purchased these from the KG location by accident didn’t realize they had more than one as I’m regularly at the Fredericksburg location. But my favorite place for seafood in this area. They always have tasty Crabs. Worth the drive. They have really good fish sandwiches as well and shrimp. Like an old country store love the atmosphere!
First time visiting this spot. The customer service was great. The crabs, crab legs & shrimp was outstanding & the prices were phenomenal. Definitely worth the drive! I don’t live near them (I’m in Fairfax) but will be returning next year at the start of crab season and will more than likely be a weekly customer!
